- Walk every affected room and shoot video, narrating as you go. Capture ceilings, walls, floors, and the source.
- Photograph serial numbers and model tags on any damaged appliances.
- Take wide shots of each room, then close-ups of the waterline on walls, buckled flooring, and soaked materials.

You won’t dry a house with a mop, but you can limit secondary damage while you wait for professional equipment.

Pull up area rugs and move furniture off wet carpet. Wet rugs left on hardwood will stain and warp the floor beneath them. Place aluminum foil or plastic wrap under furniture legs to prevent dye transfer and rust staining on carpet.
Open windows if outdoor humidity is lower than indoor humidity. In a Minnesota summer, that’s often not the case, humid outside air introduced to a wet space can make things worse. In winter, cold dry air actually helps. Use your judgment, or check the outdoor dew point.
Run whatever air movement you have, box fans, ceiling fans, to keep air circulating over wet surfaces. This is not the same as professional drying, but it slows mold’s clock.
Do not run your HVAC system if ducts pass through the affected area. You risk spreading moisture (and potential contaminants) throughout the house.
What Not to Do in the First 24 Hours
Some instincts make things worse. Avoid these:
- Don’t use a regular household vacuum on standing water. It’s a fire and electrocution hazard, and it will destroy the motor.
- Don’t use a hair dryer or space heater to dry walls. Concentrated heat on wet drywall can cause surface cracking while the interior stays saturated, and it’s a fire risk.
- Don’t paint over water stains or seal walls before the structure is confirmed dry. Trapping moisture behind a vapor barrier is how you grow mold inside a wall you can’t see.
- Don’t wait to call your insurance company. Most policies require prompt notice of a loss. Waiting days can complicate your claim even if the damage itself is clearly covered.
- Don’t assume it’s dry because the surface feels dry. Concrete slabs, plaster walls, and wood subfloors can read dry at the surface while holding significant moisture inside. Professionals use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to find what you can’t feel.
